Prom cancelled after Lesbians try to go together

I don't know how I feel about this, so I figured I'd ask the community.
On the one hand, i want to say "get over it, the times they are a changin" and on the other, I think "these are publicly funded schools, if the community sees this as something that they do not want their children exposed to, they ahve the right to voice opinion to pressure the school"
What do you all think? Was cancelling the prom the right decision?
